A vaccine composition is provided for the prophylactic and/or therapeutic treatment of fish for infection by bacteria, particularly by the organism Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida. The composition comprises components produced by a culture of the organism. The culture is treated to kill the organism prior to use, preferably by treatment with formalin after components have been produced. Two of the components, involved in invasion of host cells and produced in high quantities when the culture is grown in medium containing excess iron, induce production of antibodies on injection into fish which prevent the entry of the organism into fish cells. These antibodies protect the fish from infection by the organism.
