A method of storing data two-dimensionally on a printable or photographic medium involves reading the data in binary form, dividing it into blocks, arranging it into matrix form, adding synchronising characteristics and printing the data out or applying it to the medium. The size of the data blocks (2) is selected according to the quantity of data which the scanner can read. Test bits are added to each line and matrix. An empty line is set up in advance as a search field for the matrix. USE/ADVANTAGE - E.g. for use with hand-held scanners. The method enables data to be stored with a high data density and read out without error.
